Air Quality & Air Control detail

Overview

Air Quality & Air Control, delivered to spec.

Norkum installs and upgrades ventilation, filtration, exhaust, and air-control systems for commercial buildings across Greater Boston and the North Shore. Air control is a code and comfort issue at once: commercial ventilation is governed by ASHRAE 62.1, which sets outdoor-air rates by both occupancy and floor area, so under- or over-ventilated zones are a design and commissioning failure, not a code allowance.

We size, install, balance, and commission systems so the air actually moves the way the design intends — including the filtration, economizer, and energy-recovery pieces that commercial code requires.

What’s included

Scope we cover.

  • Ventilation design-assist & install
  • Filtration upgrades (MERV 13-ready)
  • Exhaust systems
  • Economizer & energy recovery (ERV / HRV)
  • Demand-controlled ventilation
  • Air balancing & commissioning

Greater Boston & the North Shore

What Greater Boston buildings need

ASHRAE 62.1 sets a minimum MERV-8 filter, but MERV 13 has become the practical standard of care in occupied commercial space since 2020. Massachusetts commercial code also requires economizers on larger cooling systems and energy-recovery ventilation where outdoor-air fractions run high — common in schools, healthcare, and dense workplaces. We install and commission those controls so they work in a New England winter instead of dumping freezing air into the space.

Demand-controlled ventilation lets a building deliver the right amount of outdoor air for actual occupancy — meeting indoor-air-quality requirements without heating and cooling air nobody's using.
